Galle is the outstanding example of a Portuguese-built fortified city in South and Southeast Asia, demonstrating the combination of Portuguese architectural styles and native traditions. The Dutch fortified the city significantly in the 17th century, beginning in 1649. The Galle fort is a World Heritage Site and the largest remaining European-built stronghold in Asia.
